Hau‘oli lā hānau e Charles Reed Bishop

Jan. 25, 2026

This month, we celebrate Charles Reed Bishop’s dedication to kuleana on the 204th anniversary of his birth: Jan. 25, 1822.

Charles Reed Bishop, husband of Kamehameha Schools Founder Ke Ali‘i Bernice Pauahi Pākī Bishop, was the driving force that brought his wife’s wishes to fruition and was a revered citizen of the Hawaiian Kingdom. As a prominent Hawai‘i businessman, banker, philanthropist and trustee, he utilized his personal finances and organizational skills to build the initial Kamehameha Schools campus, hire teachers, and guide the school’s mission to educate Hawaiian children.

In honor of Bishop’s 200th birthday celebration campaign in 2022, a generous donor established an endowment for students pursuing degrees in finance or entrepreneurship. It has since provided six awardees with scholarships totaling $10,200.

“Mahalo for your kōkua,” scholarship recipient Teia-Rose Souza says. “With this scholarship, I feel immensely encouraged to serve my lāhui and the next generations of Hawaiians with their financial literacy and finances so we can live stably and comfortably in our home of Hawai‘i, where the cost of living is growing faster than ever before.”

Join us today: celebrate, give and inspire the next 30 years!
We celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Pauahi Foundation and Ke Ali‘i Pauahi’s legacy by highlighting lives transformed, communities strengthened, and a future still being shaped through the generosity of donors.
