In 2009, Ke Ali'i Pauahi Foundation awarded nearly $390,000 in scholarships to 305 students in a broad spectrum of academic disciplines including Hawaiian language and studies, visual arts, social work and law. The awards were made possible, thanks to generous donors who established endowed scholarship funds.

“Our award recipients continue to exemplify what Ke Ali'i Pauahi Foundation is striving to achieve – making a meaningful impact on the greater Hawai‘i community,” said scholarship administrator Mavis Shiraishi-Nagao.

A stellar example of the integrity of our scholars is Joseph Nāwahī scholarship recipient Troy J.H. Andrade, a juris doctorate degree candidate at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s William S. Richardson School of Law.  Troy is deeply involved in the school’s Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law programs and community meetings which enables emerging leaders to research issues critical to the advancement of Native Hawaiian rights.

“This scholarship means more to me than financial assistance,” said Andrade in a note to the Foundation. “Your support and recognition motivates me to tackle this upcoming year. I have never felt more passion to help others, especially the Native Hawaiian community.”
