Endowment FAQs
What is an endowment? An endowment is a fund established to permanently support a specific purpose or need that is consistent with the mission of Ke Ali'i Pauahi Foundation. It differs from an annual award which has a one-time impact. Most of our existing endowments support post-high scholarships with criteria that range from very broad to specific degree/subject specific courses of study. The donor or donors who establish the endowment can name the fund and designate its use to support the values they hold most dear.
Unlike gifts received for immediate use, endowed gifts keep giving over time. They are placed in accounts and the annual investment earnings are used for the purpose specified by the donor.
Why should I consider creating an endowment through KAPF?
By establishing an endowed fund at KAPF, your money will provide a sustainable source of support for your intended purpose and create a legacy for generations to come. The fund can be named to honor or memorialize a significant individual, family or recognize an organization. The impact of your fund's annual support can memorialize a person whose life and example you treasure.
An endowed fund can also support a geographic community, or a specific department, program or initiative of Kamehameha Schools, such as early childhood education/literacy, advancing the Hawaiian language, land stewardship, and Charter School support.
Additionally, when you create an endowment through KAPF, you can be assured that 100% of your gift will go directly to your designated purpose. All overhead and administrative costs are covered by KAPF.
How can I establish an endowment?
An endowment is established when; 1) an account contains a minimum of $20,000, and 2) when the donor or donors complete an agreement with KAPF that identifies the scholarship purpose and criteria. The KAPF staff will work with you to develop award criteria that reflect your interests while effectively meeting the greatest needs of the foundation.
A donor can create an endowment by making a lump-sum gift of $20,000 or more, or by making several payments over a three year period until the minimum endowment amount is reached.
The initial award may be made after one year of interest is earned. While the endowment is earning interest, you may also choose to make a gift that will have an immediate impact on your desired purpose.
How are endowed fund distributions made?
Once a fund is endowed at a minimum of $20,000, the donor-established criteria determine how the foundation distributes the endowment’s annual spendable income. The annual distribution for a fund’s specified purpose is at a target rate of 4% of the total amount of the endowment, including the principal and the earnings based on a rolling 5 year average. That rate may change depending upon investment returns. When possible, distributions are also made to the principal of the endowment to allow for growth that will increase the annual distribution for the specified purpose overtime.
Can I or others add to my endowed fund?
There is no maximum level for an endowed fund, and you may add to the fund at any time. Often relatives, friends and associates who share the donor’s interests also add to these funds. KAPF will help to promote the fund.
Can I change the purpose of my endowed fund?
Should there be a need to change the purpose of your endowed fund, you can work with the KAPF staff to change the purpose of your endowment to better reflect your priorities or match the needs of the foundation.
How will I be kept informed about my fund’s activity?
Twice each year, you will receive a report from the foundation providing detail on the fund’s performance related to income earned, its share in any investment gains or losses, disbursements and contributions received for the period. If your endowed fund is for a scholarship, you will receive an invitation to meet the recipients at our annual reception.
What is the current value of endowments administered by KAPF?
KAPF administers over 100 different endowments with a value of approximately $13,500,000 (as of June 30, 2007).
