The hero, John Tana, is a 17-year-old orphan who loses his kuleana in north Maui to a sugar baron after the Great Mahele. John seeks out distant relatives in Lahaina where he struggles to understand the impact of westernization and Christianity. Whalers and sailors torment him. A beautiful cousin is tempting but under the new religion, is off limits. When he learns that the sugar baron hired a killer thug to find him, John realizes he must leave the island and sails his canoe to O‘ahu.
