General Foundation Questions
How many Foundation scholarships are available this year?
The number of scholarship funds depends on which campus you are attending. Please see the Scholarship Listing for your respective campus. Hard-copy Scholarship Listing are distributed through in-school presentations conducted by Pauahi Foundation staff.
Do I have to be a state of Hawai‘i resident and/or attend a college/university in Hawai‘i to apply?
No, not necessarily. A majority of scholarships are not restricted to Hawai‘i residents. However, there are some scholarships that do require applicants to be Hawai‘i residents or require you to attend a college/university in Hawai‘i. Refer to the scholarship listing for specific criteria.
Is there a difference between the Pauahi Foundation scholarship program and the Kamehameha Schools Post-High Financial Aid Nā Ho‘okama a Pauahi Program?
Yes, there is and you may want to consider applying for both. Foundation scholarships are funded by private donors and are awarded on the basis of academic merit and/or donor specified criteria. Kamehameha Schools’ scholarships are funded annually by the Kamehameha endowment through the Kamehameha budgeting process, which is separate from the Foundation’s funds. Therefore, the programs are different as is the application process. We advise that you review both programs and if you are eligible, apply for both. I receive financial aid from the Kamehameha Schools, do I need to apply for Foundation funds?
Yes, this is an entirely separate process. The financial aid you receive as a current student at the Kamehameha Schools is different and applies only to your tuition and fees as a student of the Kamehameha Schools. Foundation funds are for college tuition and fees and are awarded on separate criteria and requirements.
Can I apply for more than one Pauahi Foundation scholarship?
Yes, as long as you fulfill the eligibility requirements for all scholarships you apply for.
Questions Relating to the Online Application
How can I retrieve my forgotten password?
If you’ve forgotten your password, click on the “Forgot your password?” phrase on the bottom of the login page. It will allow you to reset your password through your email address you provided.
What do I do if my essay entry is being cutoff?
All essay entries have a limitation of 3,000 characters which is counted by each stroke on the keyboard (characters, spaces and returns). The counter at the bottom of the entry block indicates the number of characters you have remaining and will display a negative number if you are over the 3,000 character limit. In the event of an overage, you will need to edit your entry down to the 3,000 character limit.
What if I can’t find my institution in the application’s drop-down list?
First, check that your institution is accredited by one of these seven accrediting bodies that we recognize:
- Middle States Association of Colleges & Schools – Commission on High Education
- Northwest Commission on Colleges & Universities
- North Central Association of Colleges and Schools – The Higher Learning Commission
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges – Commission on Institutions of Higher Education
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges – Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges – Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities

Why can’t I click on the “Review Documentations” tab?
The “Review Documentations” tab will only become clickable after you’ve submitted your online application, i.e. you’ve clicked the “Submit” button at the end of the online application.
What do I do if I’m receiving an error message upon clicking the “Submit” button?
To avoid the high volume periods of application submittal, we highly suggest applicants start and submit their online applications in excess of two weeks prior to the deadline. During this high traffic period, you may have to remain online until successful submittal is completed.
May I make changes to my online application once it has been submitted?
No, once your online application is submitted request for changes must be submitted in writing prior to the deadline via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or by fax. Request for changes after the deadline will not be allowed.
How do I add another scholarship fund if I’ve already clicked the “Submit” button?
Only scholarship funds that do not require an additional essay may be added by notifying us prior to the deadline via email (email@example.com) or by fax.
What is an official transcript?
An official transcript is a record of coursework that you’ve completed at an institution, be it public, private, high school or college. What makes the record official is that the document is mailed to the Foundation directly from the institution, assuring that there is no question of tampering. Photocopies of grade reports are not an official transcript of grade and will not be accepted.
How do I request an official high school transcript?
As a current Kamehameha Schools student applying for this internal process of scholarship funds, you need only click the box under the Transcript Release section of the online application, and the Foundation will request your transcripts on your behalf.
Will you accept emailed high school transcripts from counselors or registrar’s?
No. Transcripts must be mailed directly from the high school, and for this reason we highly suggest transcripts be mailed no later than 7 working days prior to our deadline.
Regarding Letters of Recommendation
What if I don’t have a non-Kamehameha person that is able to write a letter of recommendation on my behalf?
It is highly recommended that you submit a letter of recommendation from a non-Kamehameha Schools person, however, if you do not have any contacts outside of the Kamehameha ‘ohana, you are certainly welcomed to ask a current teacher, counselor or staff member to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf.
Can a family member write a letter of recommendation on my behalf?
No. Letters of recommendation from family members are not accepted. If a letter is found to be from a family member and you are awarded a scholarship, the scholarship will be rescinded and awarded to the next eligible ranked student.
Who selects the scholarship recipients?
During the months of February through March committees established by the Foundation will evaluate all qualified applicants for each scholarship and select the awardees based on the requirements established by donors.
When will I know if I have been selected to receive a scholarship?
Notification letters (both award and denial) will be sent in April or May (depending on which campus you are attending) to the permanent address provided in your application.
If selected as a recipient, when will I receive the check?
The dual-party checks will be disbursed in July/August to your designated institution provided we receive your signed Agreement Form by the required deadline. Check with your institution for their disbursement policy.
If awarded and I decide to change institutions, am I still eligible?
Awards are based on information provided from the applicant and according to the criteria set forth by the donors. A re-evaluation of the new information will be made and you will be notified of the decision.
If awarded, can I defer the scholarship?
No. If you are unable to utilize the funds for the academic year it is being awarded for, you will forfeit the award and the scholarship will be awarded to the next eligible ranked student.
If awarded, am I eligible to receive both the Pauahi Foundation Scholarship and the Kamehameha Schools Nā Ho‘okama a Pauahi Scholarship?
Yes. The funding sources for the two programs are as diverse as our selections. If you are offered both, you are eligible to receive both.
Why must I report any scholarships or outside funding to my institutions’ financial aid office?
Assuming you are receiving a financial aid package from your institution, you are required to report any outside funding so as not to place you in an over-award situation. Any funds received (outside sources + financial aid package) that total beyond your determined financial need (from the FAFSA) will place you in an over-award situation where you will need to re-pay funds. In addition, students in an over-award situation also place the institution’s federal funding sources in jeopardy.
If I am applying for an art scholarship requiring samples of work, how should I submit my art portfolio?
Only hardcopy portfolios with high quality color prints and/or copies of work will be accepted for review. Include a cover page with your name and Pauahi Foundation applicant ID number. CDs, DVDs and emailed work will not be accepted. Portfolios will not be returned and will be retained as part of our records once submitted.
